Sondheim. Signature’s Signature.
Company is Stephen Sondheim’s brilliant musical examination of the joys and pitfalls of marriage as told by Bobby, a commitment-phobic bachelor and a group of his closest friends. Company’s award-winning score includes “Being Alive,” “Ladies Who Lunch,” “Another Hundred People,” Side by Side,” and “Little Things You Do Together.” Director Eric Schaeffer brings this iconic show to back to Signature for the first time in 20 years.

Ladies Swing the Blues: A Jazz Fable
-
The year is 1955. The place is New York City’s 52nd Street, the cultural mecca of jazz in the universe. Explore the jazz folklore, mythologies and backstage stories of the 40′s and 50′s at a gathering to commemorate the passing of jazz legend Charlie Parker. A place where music and mythology mingle in one unforgettable evening.
Four jazz divas in the tradition of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, and Peggy Lee gather in a dressing room waiting to go on. From their lips we hear the tapestry of bebop, blues, and jazz in music, and the collective storytelling that gave rise to the mythic folklore of jazz mythology about Miles, Monk, Bird, Basie, Ellington and others including the one mysteriously known as the Jazz Baroness. Experience the many colorful personalities that define one of the most pivotal music periods of the twentieth century.
In My Opinion: The team of Tom Jones and William Knowles have brought to MetroStage such acclaimed work as Bricktop, Pearl Bailey…By Request, Cool Papa’s Party and now Ladies Swing the Blues. Their shows always have great music, lyrics, and important stories that need to be told, oftentimes based on remarkable artists. Love to launch their work with some of our favorite actors. Cool Papa is being workshopped for a major production, and Pearl Bailey went on to play another theatre for several months.) You can always say I saw its premiere at MetroStage.

Sandy Bainum’s Sensational Seasonal Celebration marks the launch of her brand new holiday CD called “This Christmas.” It’s filled with many musical joys of the season including holiday favorites: “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” “The Christmas Song,” “Waiting for the Man With the Bag,” “White Christmas,” “Be a Santa,” “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve,” and many more. There are also brand new songs by the legendary Bruce Kimmel (who also directs the show and produced the CD) and bassist extraordinaire Jay Leonhart that cleverly evoke the humor and warmth of the holidays. The CD features a fabulous orchestra and arrangements by Lanny Meyers (who is also the musical director) that are as brilliant, exciting and fun as the season itself. Hamlet
We Happy Few’s six-actor, 90-minute Hamlet explores a darker, more violent take on the play, and asks: What if it is all in Hamlet’s head? Hamlet is consumed by his own thoughts, but what if he truly can’t escape? The line between what Hamlet fantasizes and what’s really happening starts to blur…. Directed by Hannah Todd, Hamlet will be presented as a Find Your Own Venue production in the 2012 Capital Fringe Festival.

Excuse My Dust
A sparkling cabaret show inspired by the remarkable life and writings of Mrs. Dorothy Parker, whose name evokes a time, place and sophisticated society when people dressed for the theater, met for supper long after the moon had made its appearance, and considered being “intellectual” a positive attribute. The show features many of the celebrated wit’s quotes and quips and many of her poems, set to glorious, period-perfect melodies written by EMMY–Award winning composer/arranger Lanny Meyers. Rounding out the evening are songs from many other luminaries of the era including Lorenz Hart, Noel Coward and Cole Porter – making for a most marvelous party. With Sandy’s Emmy-Award winning musical director – Lanny Meyers. Cabaret Director, Cindy C. Oxberry.
